![]() Primary Care Sports Medicine FellowshipSports medicine is an expanding, widely innovative and technologically advanced field of medicine involved in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of injuries in sports and the enhancement of performance in the athlete. Primary care sports medicine and orthopedic sports medicine work hand in hand in this field of medicine to continue to advance the frontiers of sports medicine. Primary care sports medicine fellowships have blossomed across the country, producing highly skilled and qualified individuals to meet the ever-expanding need. At Allegheny General, sports medicine has continued to grow as well. Most recently we have established an accredited fellowship program in primary care sports medicine. The program requires fellows to do a clinical research project and present at a national meeting. Fellows will participate in orthopaedic grand rounds, and weekly meetings to review the current literature in sports medicine. Fellows will be responsible to cover mass events such as the Citipark events, the Great Race, the Great Ride, the International Squash Tournament and national wrestling tournaments. In addition, fellows will cover sporting events at the college, high school, and professional levels, and have a responsibility for following a college and high school team with weekly training rooms implementing continuity of care. Throughout the fellowship, fellows will learn the most recent bracing, rehabilitation and diagnostic techniques in sports medicine. Fellows will be trained by professionals in manipulation and current treatment techniques including injections, casting, prolotherapy, and massage techniques. The program offers the fellows an opportunity to participate in computer/telemedicine driven diagnostic and treatment protocols. The fellowship is structured to permit the fellow to have exposure to the newest surgical innovations with leading orthopedists in sports medicine, upper extremity, foot/ankle and spine surgery.
