Cancer
Using some of the most comprehensive diagnostic and treatment services available anywhere,West Penn Allegheny Health System’s multidisciplinary
team of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, hematologists, and surgeons are battling cancer on
all fronts.

Cancer care programs and services include brain cancer; breast cancer; cellular transplantation; clinical cancer genetics; colon and rectal cancer; head and neck cancer; hematological malignancies and disorders; liver cancer; lung and thoracic cancer;medical oncology; neuro-oncology; ovarian,
cervical, and uterine cancers; palliative care services; pancreatic cancer; prostate and urologic cancer; and radiation oncology. WPAHS also is home
to Pennsylvania’s largest bone marrow and cell transplant program.

Patients who need the latest medical, hematology and radiation oncology services can access superior care at convenient locations throughout Western
Pennsylvania.

In addition, research projects conducted at West Penn Allegheny Health System have yielded landmark advances for the treatment of various forms of cancer. Cardiovascular
West Penn Allegheny Health System is distinguished across the country and around the world for excellence in the medical and surgical care of cardiac, thoracic and vascular disease.

Our multidisciplinary team of specialists focuses on the management of valve disease, heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, atria fibrillation, advanced heart surgery, vascular disease, heart and lung transplantation, surgery for diseases of the lung and esophagus, coronary artery disease and preventive cardiology with lifestyle management and education for the cardiovascular patient.

In addition, our researchers are involved in the development and application of new diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. These advances hold the promise to expand patients’ opportunities for improved cardiac health and a better quality of life.


Neurosciences
Patients with a wide range of neurological conditions are referred to West Penn Allegheny Health System
each year from across the nation and globe. Thousands of neurosurgical procedures are performed annually by our neurosurgeons, who rank among the world’s best for spinal cord, spinal disc,
tumor extraction, neurovascular and cranial nerve surgeries. In addition, WPAHS is recognized as a pioneer in the treatment of conditions such as trigeminal neuralgia, brain tumors, skull-base tumors, lumbar conditions and Parkinson’s disease.

West Penn Allegheny Health System established the region’s first Comprehensive Stroke Center, as well as the area’s largest comprehensive epilepsy program.

Our neuroscience researchers are also engaged in landmark molecular, cellular and DNA studies, along with magnetic resonance imaging to identify the
chemical makeup of brain tumors, enabling physicians to identify each tumor’s unique characteristics.

Furthermore, they are on the forefront of implant research and treatment to control epileptic seizures, tremors and therapies to combat tissue damage due to obstruction of arterial blood inflow to the brain.


Obstetrics/Gynecology
For every stage of their lives, women can find a full complement of comprehensive obstetric and gynecological services at West Penn Allegheny Health System.

WPAHS is among the leading centers in the region for maternity services, featuring highly personalized labor, delivery, recovery and postpartum care. We have accredited Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Units at Allegheny General Hospital and The Western
Pennsylvania Hospital, each equipped to provide advanced comprehensive care for newborns.Also, we provide advanced maternal-fetal medicine and high-risk pregnancy programs.

Other services include highly sophisticated OB/GYN ultrasound and gynecologic oncology programs, as well as advanced techniques and proven minimally invasive procedures for urinary incontinence, endometriosis and pelvic problems.

West Penn Allegheny Health System is affiliated with the world-renowned Jones Institute for Reproductive
Medicine, providing the most advanced level of diagnosis and treatment to couples with documented infertility through a multidisciplinary approach to
treatment, with laboratory, psychological and genetic support.


Orthopaedic Surgery
West Penn Allegheny Health System is regarded as a national leader in the treatment of trauma, the spine, total joint replacement, upper extremities, sports
medicine, foot and ankle, and physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Our orthopaedic surgeons have extensive experience in assessing and treating injuries, deformities and diseases affecting the musculoskeletal system, and access to the latest treatment modalities and research protocols to help enhance their patients’ potential to recover full mobility. Hallmarks of the program include advanced diagnostic services, comprehensive care from repair and rehabilitation to follow-up, and development of new devices and procedures that advance the treatment of the musculoskeletal system.

WPAHS physicians also provide orthopaedic services to the Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball, as well as sports medicine services and programming for numerous area school districts and coaches.


Shock Trauma/Burn Center
West Penn Allegheny Health System is home to one of the nation's most sophisticated shock trauma centers. An experienced, multidisciplinary team of trauma surgeons, specialists, nurses and support staff are on call 24/7 at an accredited Level 1 Regional Resource Trauma Center, where they treat a wide array of blunt and penetrating injuries, as well as poisonings, smoke inhalation and near drownings.

WPAHS also operates the LifeFlight Aeromedical Transport System, a regional rapid transport service for critically ill or injured patients requiring immediate specialized care. Its five helicopters provide 24/7 service to communities within a four-state region.

In addition,  WPAHS has a nationally renowned Burn Center that provides comprehensive care for patients suffering from first, second or third degree burns, as well as electrical and chemical burns. The Burn Center also provides emotional and psychological counseling, nutrition planning, and physical and occupational therapy, and offers a Summer Camp for Burned Children.

West Penn Allegheny Health System’s 3,374 nurses provide quality patient care from newborn infants to the geriatric patient population. Clinical specialties
include trauma, cardiovascular nursing care, transplant care, Level III neonatal intensive care, high-risk obstetrics, Burn Unit, hematology/oncology, bone marrow transplant, bariatric care, neurosurgery, stroke, psychiatric, orthopaedics, general surgery and medical units.

In 2006, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital became the first and only hospital in Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania to achieve Magnet Recognition™status from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the largest and most prominent nursing credentialing organization in the United
States.

Several of our nursing units received national recognition for their role in helping to dramatically reduce the incidence of hospital-acquired infections at Allegheny General Hospital.The Magnet Program recognizes excellence in nursing services.

West Penn Allegheny Health System’s two tertiary facilities are the flagships for a robust research initiative that spans a diverse range of specialties
and disciplines.

At Allegheny General Hospital, researchers are conducting pioneering studies in areas such as cardiothoracic and cardiovascular disease, human
genetics, human performance and infectious disease, musculoskeletal healing, neuroscience, oncology,
orthopaedics and psychiatry. The Allegheny-Singer Research Institute (ASRI)—the research arm of Allegheny General Hospital—sponsors collaborative
interdisciplinary programs in health, education and research in order to promote the understanding, treatment and prevention of human diseases.ASRI
takes a unique ‘translational’ approach that moves advances quickly from the laboratory to the bedside to improve the standard of care. In addition, the National Surgical Breast and Bowel Project
(NSABP), which is based on the Allegheny campus and supported by the National Cancer Institute, coordinates the efforts of more than 6,000 medical
professionals in the study of breast and bowel cancer, and offers patients access to innovative cancer treatment.AGH is also home to the Gerald McGinnis Cardiovascular Institute Center for
Research and Innovation, where investigators are developing a new generation of innovative diagnostic and treatment methodologies for patients with cardiovascular disease.

Researchers at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital are also dedicated to finding new and better ways to
advance the health of the community. Through grant funding, biostatistical support and grants and clinical trial administration that is supported by the West Penn Foundation, studies are being conducted in clinical areas such as burn care, cardiology and oncology.

For example, the Western Pennsylvania Cancer Institute provides patients with leukemia and lymphoma access to groundbreaking clinical research
including the implementation of novel disease processes, while the West Penn Burn Unit spearheads research to ensure that patients receive the very latest in burn care therapies.
