AGH Obstetrics and Gynecology Department

Throughout its history, Allegheny General has maintained a commitment to the health and welfare of woman. That commitment remains steadfast today through Allegheny General Hospital’s wide range of obstetrics and gynecologic services. More than 1,600 babies are born each year in Allegheny General’s technologically advanced labor, delivery and recovery rooms. To help ensure the health and safety of the woman and newborn, anesthesiologists, perinatologists and neonatologists are available around-the-clock to augment care provided by their personal physician.

Allegheny General has a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit equipped to provide advanced levels of comprehensive care for critically ill newborns, and a Level I Regional Resource Trauma Center with experienced trauma physicians and critical care nurses who can handle obstetrical trauma.

Allegheny General’s OB/GYNs are among the region’s most respected and innovative surgeons - offering advanced techniques and proven minimally invasive procedures for urinary incontinence, endometriosis and pelvic problems.

To facilitate same-day procedures and shorter hospital stays, a dedicated gynecologic surgery outpatient unit is on the same floor as the OB/GYN operating rooms. Staff members on this unit endeavor to provide a seamless passage for patients undergoing gynecologic surgery at Allegheny General.

A wide range of programs and services are offered to our patients. Included are:

The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine

The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine combines the latest technology in high-risk obstetrical services with personalized care. Full-time perinatologists coordinate the program, which also integrates the experience of the hospital’s departments of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Pediatrics, and the Allegheny Center for Medical Genetics. Services included:
  • Perinatal consultations regarding previous pregnancy issues, management of high-risk pregnancies, and coordinating timing and method of delivery.
  • Level II ultrasound testing using sophisticated equipment to detect and evaluate fetal anomalies, abnormal fetal growth and multiple gestations. The Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine performs more than 4,500 ultrasound evaluations annually.
  • Fetal testing, including non-stress tests/contraction stress tests, biophysical profiles, amniotic fluid indices and Doppler flow assessments.

Infertility Treatments

Allegheny General offers a full range of infertility treatments - including microsurgery to open blocked Fallopian tubes and treat endometriosis, induction of ovulation and treatment for male infertility - as well assisted reproductive services.

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology

The Division of Gynecologic Oncology offers an innovative approach to treating cancer of the uterus, ovaries and endometrium that integrates radiation and an chemotherapy with pelvic surgery to provide total care for gynecologic oncology patients. Minimally invasive surgical techniques are used whenever possible. Surgeons can remove pelvic tumors using extracorporeal circulation, a procedure developed by an Allegheny General gynecologic surgeon that eliminates the need for blood transfusions.

Pregnancy Loss Support Group

Pregnancy Loss Support Group - a support group for those who have experienced a miscarriage, stillbirth or the death of a newborn.

Continence Program for Women

Continence Program for Women - evaluates and provides consultation for women with urinary incontinence and/or genital tract prolapse.

Expert evaluations, diagnosis and a wide array of treatment services are available for your patients with irregular or painful periods, vaginitis and other gynecologic conditions. Our pediatric and adolescent gynecologists also are skilled in performing a teen’s first pelvic examination.

By any measure, Allegheny General continues to offer the most sophisticated and advanced OB/GYN services available.
