The 5th annual Big Blue Quest took place on April 19 at North Park. More than 850 participants donated more than $100,000 to fund research initiatives for colorectal cancer. The goal of this event is to increase awareness that colorectal cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable with regular screenings and precautionary measures. Participants registered for a two or five kilometer fun walk or a five kilometer timed race. Through the efforts of the volunteers and the enthusiasm of the participants, this year’s Big Blue Quest was undoubtedly the most successful in the history of the event.
This year’s AGH Auxiliary Gala was titled April in Paris, a romantic theme that featured music by Sputzy and the Soul Providers and a vibrant array of flowers provided by Blooms Florist. Unique prizes were auctioned including a five-night trip to Paris, France and a round of golf with Pirates Manager John Russell. Funds raised at this event – which totaled approximately $250,000 – benefited the Allegheny General Hospital Department of Radiation Oncology, one of the most sophisticated and progressive radiation oncology centers in the country that is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art care to its patients.
The Gerald McGinnis Cardiovascular Institute Speaker Series is a highly successful event that raises money to benefit programs of the institute. The late Tim Russert, former managing editor and moderator of NBC's "Meet The Press" and Washington bureau chief of NBC News, spoke about the American political scene several months prior to his sudden death in June of 2008.
The Allegheny General Hospital Department of Neurosurgery sponsored a weekend of activities to recognize the scientific accomplishments of Peter J. Jannetta, M.D., vice chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Allegheny General Hospital and an internationally recognized expert in the treatment of cranial nerve diseases. The activities celebrated Dr. Jannetta’s lifetime of dedication to advancing the care of patients with complex, neurological diseases.
