Lectures

A

ttendance at lectures is mandatory except in the event of an emergency.  All residents are expected to participate in conferences from 6:00 am until 7:30 am daily (except on Tuesday, when conference runs until 8:30 am).  There is an updated schedule of conferences available to residents on a monthly basis.  Topics are made available to residents at least one full week in advance to allow time for necessary reading.  The conference schedule varies slightly from week to week, but typically includes lectures on Trauma, Tumor or Basic Science on Mondays, Grand Rounds, M and M, Spine, Foot and Ankle, or research conference on Tuesdays, Sports or Peds on Wednesdays, Joints on Thursdays and Hand on Fridays.

Regular conferences run from September through May.  The conference schedule in July and August is made up of the summer lecture series.  This is a comprehensive lecture series aimed at reviewing the basics of the Orthopedic history, physical exam, x-rays, anatomy, and basic skills.  Methods of teaching include didactic lecture, sawbones, cadaver dissection, arthroscopy lab, and visiting professor seminars in anatomy and tumor.

Residents are responsible for Grand rounds each Tuesday unless there is a visiting professor.  Two cases will be presented as time permits.  The first case should be one that would incite in-depth discussion. The second case should be a brief presentation of an interesting problem.

Morbidity and mortality conference occurs on the third Tuesday of each month preceding grand rounds.  Cases will be added to a running list in the resident office on a monthly basis.  The resident involved in the initial case is responsible for presenting the complication.

Journal Club occurs on a monthly basis and is specialty specific.  It occurs at a restaurant or other location chosen by the supervising attending.  One of the PGY 4 residents is responsible for collecting and assigning pertinent articles from the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery.  Typically, each resident will summarize an article every other month.

Each year there are several academic opportunities available to all residents in addition to the regularly scheduled conferences.  These include, but are not limited to, the Spine Symposium, Upper Extremity Conference, Monthly Tumor Series, Visiting Professor Presentations/ Dinner (including Dr Weiner and Dr Schneck) and Annual Summer Education.  Participation in the above are considered mandatory
