A Day in the Life

he schedule for any given day varies depending on the rotation schedule and the case load.  Some rotations lend themselves to a more hectic schedule than others, while other rotations contain a significantly larger clinical component.  The schedule does vary slightly from class year to class year, however, such variations are minor and generally involve carrying the call pager during the day.

In general, the residents arrive at work around 5:30 am and round until 6:00 am, at which time they attend daily fracture conference until 6:30 am.  At 6:30 all residents attend didactic lecture until 7:30 am.  At 7:30 am the first cases are being wheeled back in the operating room and the operative day commences.  Typically, there is enough time between cases to write orders, dictate, and eat lunch.  Most days, the residents are finishing up in the operating room between 4:30 and 5:00 pm.  Prior to leaving, the last case  and any post-op x-rays are signed out and the residents are on their way home.

The following is a rundown of the weekly schedule for each rotation:

In General

1.  Every resident has a minimum of one half day per week in the office

2.  Every resident has a minimum of one half day per week for research

3.  Chief residents will share responsibility for:

      a.  Chief clinic

      b.  Tumor service

      c.  Academic program

      d.  Clinical rotations

      e.  OR coverage

4.  Chief residents will have an additional half day per week for their           administrative responsibilities

Trauma

Monday: OR both residents

Hand
