Conferences and Travel

P

articipation in conferences and meetings is encouraged by the department.  A 1,500 dollar travel stipend is provided by the institution upon arrival as a PGY 1 and is maintained over the course of the full five years.  In addition, the department will reimburse for travel expenses and out of pocket expenses up to fifty dollars per day for “scheduled” meetings.  Scheduled meetings include:

PGY 5:         Orthopedic Review Course

PGY 4:         American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Annual Meeting - 5 days, February

                        Enneking Tumor Course

PGY 2:         AO/ASIF Orthopaedic Residents Basic Course - 5 days, October

It is the policy of the department to encourage resident participation in research.  To this end, any resident who completes a research project will be encouraged to present this project at a regional or national meeting.  Each year, any resident having an abstract accepted to a national meeting will be sent to present the paper.  If the resident is interested in presenting at more than one meeting, he will need the approval of the faculty member who is supervising the project, as well as the program chairman.  Permission to attend any additional meetings will be given on a case by case basis.
