Pediatric Orthopedics
esidents participate in the Pediatric Orthopedic Service and work with specialty trained pediatric orthopedic surgeons to help children reach maximum function during walking, sitting and daily activities. This training includes treatments for conditions such as bone tumors, cerebral palsy, club foot, dislocated hips, slipped femoral epiphysis, muscular dystrophy, Perthes disease, scoliosis, skeletal dysplasia and spina bifida.
Residents become familiar with
modern technological advancements such as the use of stainless steel
rods, pedicle screws and fasteners fitted specifically for children in
order to correct most scoliotic and other spinal deformities. Residents
also become proficient with casting, flexible nails, and the titanium
plates and screws used for fractures and congenital deformities of the
musculo-skeletal system.
