Singer Research Lab

A

llegheny General Hospital recognizes that the hospital can improve the quality of health care through innovative research.  Orthopaedic surgery residents have access to research activities, space, equipment, and support personnel through Allegheny-Singer Research Institute’s Biomechanics Research Laboratory which is housed in 2,100 square foot suite on the tenth floor of the south tower.  The Lab provides opportunities for basic and applied science research pertaining to relevant Orthopedic problems.

Ongoing research involves the study of hand strength after CMC arthroplasty, a comparison of surgical variations in radial head replacement, analysis of ulnar collateral ligament reconstruction, and wear of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene.  Gait studies are also underway concerning the functional outcome with UniSpacer implantation in the postponement of knee replacement.  Basic science research in the laboratory is directed by the faculty and senior residents and is conducted by the junior residents and science students working in the laboratory.

The Biomechanics Research Laboratory employs a Technical Director, a Post-doctoral Fellow, a research engineer and a student completing masters degree studies in engineering.  Two additional students work full-time during the summer.
