Department of Neurology
Jon Brillman, M.D., Department Chairman
Allegheny General Hospital’s Department of Neurology places
a strong emphasis on traditional clinical evaluations based on
the patient’s history and neurological signs, as well as
communication with the patient and family concerning the disease
process. Sophisticated technological capabilities are available
to support traditional patient evaluation.
The hospital maintains an average daily census of 12
neurological patients, and nine full-time staff neurologists
attend to an average of 30 patients on a consultative basis.
Annually, the department treats more than 7,000 outpatients and
provides more than 1,500 inpatient consultations, including 700
pediatric cases.
Eight monitored maximum-observation neurology beds and 42
other telemetry-equipped beds
are available for patient care. The department’s diagnostic
capabilities include EEG, EMG, evoked potentials, nerve
conduction velocity studies and continuous video-EEG monitoring.
Among the services offered by the Department of Neurology are
inpatient and outpatient clinical programs focusing on epilepsy,
stroke, multiple sclerosis, movement disorders, neuromuscular
disorders and neuro-oncology.
