James H. McMaster, M.D., Department Chairman

Allegheny General Hospital is on the forefront of design, development and introduction of new technology. Physicians regularly participate in national and international research projects and presentations. Long-term research efforts focus on the use and outcomes of tibial and humeral nails, external fixation devices and titanium plates and screws. In many cases, the orthopaedic trauma staff members at Allegheny General Hospital were involved in the design and development of these technologies and were the first to use them.

Human Motion Center

The Human Motion Center at Allegheny General Hospital is one of the few of its type in western Pennsylvania, offering a comprehensive set of services devoted specifically to restoring and maintaining the function of the musculoskeletal system. Physicians have access to the latest treatment modalities and research protocols to help enhance patients’ potential to recover full mobility.

Through a multi-disciplinary approach to assessment, diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and research, the Human Motion Center provides patients with an academically based and integrated level of care that extensively addresses their needs.

Physicians from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and representatives from a variety of the hospital’s medical, surgical and ancillary support areas work together to design an individualized treatment plan for each patient. Each patient’s family physician retains an integral role in this team concept and is invited to participate in all aspects of care. This approach exemplifies Allegheny General Hospital’s commitment to combining advanced technology with individualized, personal care.

The Human Motion Center is staffed by fellowship-trained physicians who treat general orthopaedic problems and specialize in the areas of trauma, spine, total joint replacement, hand and upper extremities, pediatric orthopaedics, sports medicine, foot and ankle, and physical medicine and rehabilitation. The hospital’s orthopaedic physicians have extensive experience in assessing and treating injuries, deformities and diseases affecting the musculoskeletal system.
