The Emergency/Sports Medicine Fellowship Program

Edward Snell, M.D., Program Director

Length of program: 1 year
Number of position(s): 1

Sports medicine is an expanding, widely innovative and technologically advanced field of medicine involved in diagnosing, treating and preventing injuries in sports and in enhancing performance in athletes. Primary-care sports medicine and orthopaedic sports medicine work hand in hand in this field to continue to advance the frontiers of sports medicine. Primary-care sports medicine fellowships are blossoming across the country, producing highly skilled and qualified individuals to meet the ever-expanding need. At Allegheny General Hospital, sports medicine continues to grow as well. The accredited Emergency/Sports Medicine Fellowship Program was established to meet these needs.

The program requires fellows to conduct a clinical research project and present at national meetings. Fellows participate in Orthopaedic Grand Rounds and weekly meetings to review current literature in sports medicine.

In addition, fellows are responsible for covering mass events such as Citiparks events, the Great Race, the international squash tournament and national wrestling tournaments. Fellows also cover sporting events at the college, high school and professional levels and are responsible for following college and high school teams with weekly training rooms, implementing a continuity of care program.

Throughout the program, fellows learn the most recent bracing, rehabilitation and diagnostic techniques available in sports medicine. Trained by professionals in manipulation, fellows learn current treatment techniques, including injections, casting, prolotherapy, extracorporeal shockwave therapy, and massage techniques. The program allows fellows to participate in computer/telemedicine-driven diagnostic and treatment protocols. The program's structure permits fellows to be exposed to the newest surgical orthopaedic innovations with leading orthopaedists in sports medicine, upper extremity, foot/ankle, pediatric, and spine surgery.

The fellows advance through the following rotations during their one year fellowship:
  • Radiology
  • Orthopaedic Sports Medicine x 2 Months
  • Primary Sports Medicine x 2 Months
  • Nutrition in Athletes
  • Gait/Exercise Testing
  • Dental/Endocrinology
  • Research
  • ENT/Ophthalmology
  • Cardiology
They participate in pre-season and pre-participation physicals for the Pittsburgh Pirates Professional Baseball Team, Duquesne University athletes and many high school teams.
