About Us
In 1995, Allegheny General Hospital completed construction of the 67,000-square-foot Northwest Wing, which includes the new Emergency Department, Trauma Intensive Care Unit, two-tier parking garage and heliport. The new Emergency Department can accommodate 65,000 patient visits annually. The Emergency Department houses 30 examination/treatment rooms, including five resuscitation bays. The new Trauma Intensive Care Unit has 24 beds and is adjacent to hospital operating rooms.
Regional Resource (Level 1) Trauma Center
Since 1986, Allegheny General has been a Regional Resource (Level 1) Trauma Center, dedicated to providing sophisticated care to area trauma patients. Today, Allegheny General admits more than 2,500 patients annually to its program. The specialized Trauma Surgical Intensive Care Unit (TSICU) includes 24 fully monitored beds. Residents in PGY-1 spend one month on the trauma rotation, actively participating in Allegheny General's multidisciplinary approach to treating trauma patients. PGY-2 residents spend one month on the trauma ICU rotation, and PGY-3 residents spend one month on an Emergency Department/Trauma Resuscitation rotation, during which time they gain experience as the command physician running major trauma resuscitations. The Emergency Department R-3 and Attending are also responsible for securing all Trauma related airways.
The hospital also supports a computerized trauma registry of all patients treated in the Trauma Unit. This trauma registry has amassed a data pool of 32,000 patients and its database serves as a valuable resource for research and investigation of trauma-related topics.
