Allegheny General Hospital Search:
The Emergency Medicine Residency Program

Jeffery Cook , MD

Medical School: Emory University School of Medicine

Undergraduate: Bowdoin College - Brunswick, ME (Biochemistry)

Hometown: Atlanta, GA

Brief Narrative:

I grew up in the suburbs of Atlanta, GA before deciding it was time for a change and headed to Maine for college.  In Maine, I majored in Biochemisty and spent a lot of time in research lab.  When I would escape from school and research, I took advantage of the landscape and spent as much time as I could on the rivers, mountains, trails and beaches of northern New England.  Whitewater kayaking and leading whitewater kayaking trips and instructional classes, in particular, were big time expenditures for me.  After college I decided to return home to Atlanta to be near friends and family for med school.

II chose AGH because it was a busy ED with diverse pathology in a medium size program with lots of learning opportunities both in the hospital and out (EMS, Life Flight, away/international elective flexibility, etc).  Pittsburgh was also very appealing to me for having big city culture and character, while only having to drive about 20 minutes or so to get out into the woods.  I also found that the residents seemed to be a pretty tight-knit group of well-rounded people with both medical and non-medical interests.

Interests:

Traveling, whitewater kayaking, hiking, running, cycling and just about anything outside.  Quality beer, watching movies, and getting to know Pittsburgh have more recently occupied my free time.  Outside of the ED, I hope to explore some of the diverse EM pathways through Wilderness Medicine and/or international health care.
