Emergency Medical Services

The West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS) is offering qualified candidates the opportunity to apply for its Fellowship in Emergency Medical Services. The fellowship is based at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. Allegheny General features one of the busiest emergency departments and air medical programs and is designated as a Regional Resource (Level I) Trauma Center for the state of Pennsylvania.


Program Highlights

The fellowship in Emergency Medical Services provides a range of opportunities in out-of-hospital research, didactic and clinical instruction, ground and air medical operations, administrative and media experience. Fellows also have the opportunity to provide medical direction fro the multiple emergency medical services affiliated with WPAHS.

These opportunities are available in a variety of settings; urban, suburban, and rural. The program director works with candidates to tailor their training programs to meet each individual's goals.


Academic Accreditation
The Society of Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) has approved the Allegheny General fellowship as an official training site for its Physio-Control EMS Fellowship Award. Fellows receive a certificate of completion after each year of training. The fellowship in Emergency Medical Services exceeds the national standards developed by SAEM and the National Association of EMS Physicians.

The fellowship lasts 12 months. After a 24-month program for those seeking a master's or other advanced degree is also available.


Qualifications
Fellowship applicants must have a medical degree and be board-certified or board-eligible in emergency medicine. They also must have three years of emergency medicine residency experience accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education.

Fellowship faculty have widely recognized expertise in a range of emergency medicine areas and have extensive experience in the following:
  • Disaster medicine and terrorism
  • Hazmat and prehospital toxicology
  • Injury surveillance and prevention
  • Nuclear, biological, and chemical attack preparedness and response
  • Prehospital telemedicine
  • Presidential and VIP out-of-hospital care
  • Systems development and management
  • Tactical/operational medicine

Dr. Stein is medical director of Emergency Medical Support Services and assistant professor of emergency medicine at MCP Hahnemann University. A graduate of Purdue University and The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, Dr. Stein completed his emergency medicine residency at Darnall Army Community Hospital in Fort Hood, Texas.

Dr. Stein has more than 20 years of Army service, including nine in active duty. He served five years as special agent for the Army's Joint Special Operations Command, providing medical support for counter-terrorism Special Operation forces. He also has been deployed as medical support for Operation Desert Shield/Storm (Iraq) and Operation Joint Endeavor/Guard (Bosnia). Among his multiple areas of expertise, his special interests include telemedicine and expanded scope of practice for out-of hospital providers.
