Allegheny General's Emergency Department is an extremely fast-paced environment which offers excellent experience to the individual seeking a challenge in Emergency Medicine. The department employs approximately 50 ER nurses, 9 paramedics and 6 unit secretaries, The department itself houses 30 examination/treatment rooms, including five resuscitation bays, and sees over 40,000 patients annually.

Nurses employed in the Emergency Department are required to take a Trauma Nurse course within one year of hiring, to obtain and maintain certification in ACLS and PALS within one year, and CEN certification within three years. Required Emergency Medicine education is provided.

Paramedic partners must be certified in the State of Pennsylvania, and maintain their certifications through continuing education and regulations set forth in PA EMS Act 82. A minimum of two years field experience as a paramedic is required prior to working in the Emergency Department. PHTLS/BTLS is preferred, and employed paramedics must maintain current and continuous certifications in BLS, ACLS, and PALS.

Unit secretaries working in the Emergency Department must have a high school diploma or GED, one year of secretarial training or experience, and possess advanced knowledge of medical terminology. Excellent phone manners and an ability to handle several phone calls at once is a must.
