![]() LifeFlight LifeFlight is a regional emergency helicopter transportation service providing rapid transportation for critically ill and injured patients who need immediate specialized care. LifeFlight is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.LifeFlight operates helicopters based in various locations throughout the region. Each helicopter is medically equipped and staffed with two specially trained flight nurses and a pilot. LifeFlight nurses have additional certifications in ACLS, PALS, NALS, and PHTLS. All LifeFlight nurses must also be a paramedic or obtain their PHRN. LifeFlight helicopters operate within a 130-mile radius of Pittsburgh and provide critical care services. Helicopters provide transport from the scene of an accident to the most appropriate health-care facility or from a health-care facility to specialty-care center.LifeFlight's new MD-900 Explorer helicopters have Instrument Flight Rules capability. The MD-900 Explorers can fly at speeds of 155mph and are among the quietest, safest helicopters in the air, according the the manufacturer, McDonnell Douglas. LifeFlight's helicopter transport service is an integral part of the prehospital care system and is designed to augment conventional ground transportation.
