The Center for Poison Treatment

The Medical Toxicology Treatment Center at Allegheny General Hospital was established in 1988 as the first poison treatment in Western Pennsylvania, and continues its dedicated efforts in treatment of poisoned patients. The Center and its staff remain on the forefront of care for the management of acute and chronic poisonings, drug overdoses, occupational exposures, and reproductive toxicology.

The Center's services extend from the out-of-hospital care provider through the emergency department and critical care units and on to comprehensive rehabilitation, psychiatric, and occupational health service. Active basic science programs in toxicology and pharmacology maintain cutting edge therapy for patients, while integration with around-the-clock social services and the highly regarded medical and surgical specialties at Allegheny General Hospital cover all aspects of a patient's needs.

The Medical Toxicology Treatment Center was founded and is still headed by Fred Harchelroad, MD, one of the first graduates of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Allegheny General, and a certified medical toxicologist. He and his staff are available for routine outpatient care, outreach services or educational purposes. They can be reached at 412-359-3368, or via e-mail at fharchel@wpahs.org
