Internal Medicine Residency Program at Allegheny General Hospital

Inpatient Services

Patients admitted or referred to Allegheny General Hospital's Department of Medicine give residents an opportunity to manage an interesting cross-section of medical conditions. This varied experience enhances career development during the three-year training program. Including critical-care cases, the department averages a daily census of 275 patients.

Interns admit up to five patients on a call night and are supervised by their team resident with whom they share call.

General Medicine

Patients admitted to one of the five general medicine teams represent a mixture of patients from the local North Pittsburgh area and patients referred in from outlying facilities in Western Pennsylvania, Eastern Ohio and West Virginia.  Each team is comprised of medical students, two or three interns, 1 senior resident, and 1 attending. Overnight call is taken by the team every fifth night.

Hospitalist Service

Patients admitted to this special general medicine service largely come from Allegheny General Hospital-owned practices in Greater Pittsburgh. The Hospitalist Service is staffed by four interns and two senior residents.  Inerns take overnight call every fourth night.  Senior residents provide daytime coverage.  The hospitalist attendings provide 24 hour coverage and lead the medical emergency team.

Oncology Service

Three senior residents admit patients to the hematology/oncology service, under the supervision of an oncology fellow and attending. These residents provide daytime coverage.

Intensive Care Unit

Because Allegheny General Hospital is a tertiary academic medical center, Allegheny General Hospital house staff care for a wide spectrum of acute medical and cardiac emergencies in the large Medical Intensive Care (MICU) and Cardiac Care units (CCU).

The MICU is staffed with 5 interns, 3 senior residents, 1 pulmonary/critical care fellow, and 1 pulmonary/critical care attending.  Interns take overnight call every fifth night.  Senior residents provide shift based coverage.  The pulmonary/critical care fellows provide 24 hour in-house coverage.

The CCU is staffed by 4 senior residents, 1 cardiology fellow and 1 cardiology attending.  Senior residents take overnight call every fourth night.  The cardilogy fellows provide 24 hour in-house coverage.

Ambulatory Care

In Medical Ambulatory Clinic (MAC), residents have the opportunity to deliver ongoing care to a group of patients in a setting similar to private office practice. Faculty preceptors are readily available and lead didactic and case conferences before each session, reviewing principles of preventive medicine and management of common ambulatory problems.

PGY-1 residents also spend a one-month block in the MAC, where they are exposed to the principles of outpatient medicine and can intensively develop their outpatient panels.
