Internal Medicine at Allegheny General Hospital

The Division of General Internal Medicine provides comprehensive inpatient and ambulatory adult medical care to Allegheny General. It serves as clinical home to respected primary care physicians with offices both on campus and in convenient community sites.

Clinical services offered include primary diagnosis of new disorders; management of chronic disease states such as asthma, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, lipid disorders, arthritis and HIV infection; health screening and preventive services, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, lipid disorders, arthritis and HIV infection; health screening and preventive services; and wellness programs. All division members may be designated as primary care physicians (PCPs) for most of the major regional health-care plans including SelectBlue, Keystone, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, U.S. Healthcare, Health America, Gateway and MedPlus.

Programs and services include:

  • Outpatient adult primary care in private office settings
  • Allegheny Hospitalist Service -- physician teams that specialize in inpatient care to help enhance patient care and improve communication with referring physicians
  • Medicine Consultation Service -- assures continuity of medical care for surgical, obstetrical, gynecological and psychiatric services
  • Center for Medical Ethics -- a consultative support to health-care teams regarding advance directives, patient advocacy, end-of-life decision-making, organ donation and procurement, and deployment of new medical technologies. An inpatient program in palliative care is being developed.
  • Health services research, with emphasis on quality improvement and outcomes studies
  • Community outreach and wellness programs
  • Center for the Study and Care of the Medically Underserved -- is focused on education, research and patient care activities related to underserved groups. Education activities include core educational lectures and continuity medical care experience for medical residents and medical students. Additional direct service to a Northside homeless shelter and an elective in international health sponsored by the Hôpital Albert Schweitzer, Deschapelles, Haiti are available to residents. Research activities supported through the center focus on clinical outcomes, practice improvement and enhancement of services for underserved groups.
