Allegheny General Hospital has been designated a Blue Distinction Center for Complex and Rare Cancers offering comprehensive cancer care programs for a number of complex and rare sub-types of cancer, including bladder cancer, brain cancer, esophageal cancer, pancreatic cancer, rectal cancer, and thyroid cancer. In addition, the Allegheny General Cancer Center is accredited from the Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS) demonstrating commitment to providing the best in cancer diagnosis and treatment. The Center unites the hospital's clinical oncology programs and research protocols as well as provides tools for support and strength needed to deal with the many ramifications of cancer. Seasoned clinicians in medical oncology, surgical oncology, hematological malignancies, radiation oncology, pathology, and radiology in the treatment of lung, breast, colorectal, prostate, liver, brain, gastrointestinal and gynecologic cancers lead the Center contributing to this comprehensive cancer program which consistently ranks among the nation's best. Each specialty and service is staffed by experts working as a multidisciplinary team including genetic counseling and social services caring for the unique needs of each patient with cancer. Using the latest techniques and technology to detect and destroy cancer, Allegheny clinicians pinpoint tumors of any shape with targeted radiation beams; use genes to treat brain tumors; harness radio-waves to kill once-inoperable liver tumors; couple a drug and laser beam to shrink esophageal cancers; deep- freeze prostate tumors; eradicate lung cancer while sparing healthy tissue and reveal the tiniest calcifications that may signal breast cancer at its earliest, most treatable phase. Clinical research is conducted by the Allegheny Cancer Center belonging to most of the National Cancer Institute's major clinical trials groups.
