Robotic Surgery for Men

Allegheny General Hospital is pleased to provide new minimally invasive, robotic surgical approaches for the treatment of prostate cancer, ureteropelvic junction (UPJ) obstruction and other urologic conditions.

Radical Prostatectomy

Approximately 16 percent of American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. With increasing public awareness, early detection and new treatments, survival rates for prostate cancer are improving.

One of the most common treatments for prostate cancer involves removal of the prostate gland, known as radical prostateectomy. Traditional open prostatectomy requires an 8-10 inch incision. West Penn Allegheny Health System offers minimally invasive prostatectomy with the da Vinci robotic surgery system. Talk to your physician to see if you may be a candidate for this procedure, which may result in less pain, blood loss and scarring as well as a shorter hospital stay and quicker recovery.

Pyeloplasty

Da Vinci robotic surgery can result in better outcomes for patients undergoing pyeloplasty for UPJ. In addition to quicker overall recovery, patients undergoing da Vinci urologic surgery may also experience quicker return to urinary continence and sexual function.

Nephrectomy

Minimally invasive robotic surgery may be an ideal approach for patients requiring removal of the kidney or part of the kidney and ureter.
