The Anticoagulation Clinic at Alle-Kiski Medical Center specializes in the care of patients receiving anticoagulant medications to prevent blood clots. The clinic is staffed by pharmacists who have special training in anticoagulation therapy.
New patients will be comprehensively evaluated with regard to indication, benefits, risks and goals of anticoagulation therapy. Patients will be given thorough instruction on the safe and effective use of the anticoagulant medication. At each appointment, the pharmacist will monitor the patient's blood work using a point-of-care machine. This machine provides results in two minutes using a single drop of blood from a finger. Based on these results, the pharmacist will adjust the medication dosage if needed. Patients also will be assessed for any problems or changes and provided support through re-education as necessary.
Patients must be referred to the Anticoagulation Clinic by their physician. Referrals to the clinic can be made at any time during therapy. Patients will be seen in the clinic at intervals based on their individual plan of care. Visits are scheduled by appointment only.
Located on the third floor at AKMC, the clinic sees patients from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. For more information, call 724-226-7258.
