Sleeping pattern problems are usually characterized by sleepiness, snoring and interruptions in breathing patterns. People affected by sleep disorders may benefit from the Sleep Studies Laboratory of Alle-Kiski Medical Center.
In the Sleep Studies Lab, specially trained professionals diagnose and treat sleep-related disorders. Some of the conditions treated include:
Sleep apnea - a condition that causes people to stop breathing temporarily during sleep.
Narcolepsy - an overwhelming desire to sleep.
To find out if a person suffers from a sleep disorder, a professional at the Sleep Studies Laboratory conducts a test called a polysomnogram. This painless procedure allows our staff to evaluate and diagnose sleep disorders. The polysomnogram involves an overnight stay in a comfortable sleeping environment in the Sleep Studies Laboratory at Allegheny Valley Hospital.
Through the night, a specially trained technologist monitors the electrical activity of the brain, cardiac rhythm, muscle activity, eye movement, respiratory activity, oxygen levels and other parameters. The exam results are evaluated by a sleep physician or neurologist and forwarded to the patient’s doctor.
