sponsored by Department of Medicine, Division of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, Allegheny General Hospital in collaboration with The Breathe Project and The Suburban Health Foundation , Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

To commemorate World Asthma Day on May 7th, Allegheny General Hospital and West Penn Allegheny Health System are presenting a Summit on asthma and other serious health issues relating to air pollution in the Pittsburgh region. The Summit will focus on asthma causes, its high prevalence in our region, and gaps in treatment of the disease. The Summit will also examine newly presented research findings about other air pollution-related health impacts in our region including cancer, premature birth and low birth weight, cardiopulmonary illness and premature death.

Intended Audience and Objectives

This conference is intended for internal medicine and family practice physicians, pediatricians, physician’s assistants, nurse practitioners, nurses, asthma specialists, pulmonary specialists, cardiac specialists, obstetricians, public health specialists and members of the community. The Summit is open to the public and is free for all nonmedical professionals (medical professionals pay a nominal fee).

At the conclusion of the conference, participants should have the ability to:

  • identify the full range of key health impacts associated with air pollution in the Pittsburgh region
  • summarize the current asthma epidemic in Pittsburgh
  • identify asthma control strategies
  • provide an update on air quality issues in Pittsburgh
  • discuss the impact of air quality on asthma and other health issues

Accreditation

Physicians

Allegheny General Hospital is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Allegheny General Hospital designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Nurses

For the purposes of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME.

The Breathe Project

The Breathe Project is a growing coalition of more than 150 businesses, government groups, healthcare organizations, universities, and other nonprofits, as well as nearly 20,000 on-line participants in southwestern Pennsylvania, that are working together to clean our air for healthy communities and a strong economy. Our goal is to make sure everyone in the Pittsburgh region has clean, healthy air to breathe every day.
