Patients young and old are cared for by highly-skilled, highly-trained emergency medicine physicians and nurses who provide 24-hour patient care. Our goal is to have patients visited by a physician within 20 minutes.

Waiting time is important to patients and the emergency department staff has implemented procedures to reduce waiting time to a minimum. Upon arrival, patients are immediately taken to an examination room where registration, triage and an initial assessment are completed at the bedside. And, a full complement of on-call specialists is available to meet patients’ medical/surgical needs.

The Emergency Department at Canonsburg General Hospital treats more than 19,000 patients each year.

Canonsburg General Hospital's new state-of -the-art Emergency Department features 18 large, private treatment rooms, cutting-edge digital X-ray equipment within the department and expanded, comfortable family waiting areas.

The department also boasts the latest in computerized patient tracking and information systems. To further reduce waiting time and to allow nurses to remain at the bedside providing care, a robot (TUG) was purchased to deliver specimens from the emergency department to the laboratory. A decrease in the turnaround time of test results has been realized since TUG's arrival.

Jonathan Landis, M.D., a board-certified emergency medicine physician with years of emergency medicine experience, serves as the department’s medical director. Beverly Mueller, a certified emergency nurse and the deparment's nurse manager, brings 25 years of emergency medicine experience. All of the nurses in the department have at least five years of emergency department experience and are certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

The department’s physicians provide medical command to several area ambulance crews. Paramedics utilize an EKG machine that transmits results to doctors in the Emergency Department for rapid medical intervention.

Canonsburg General Hospital now serves as a base for Allegheny General Hospital's renowned LifeFlight helicopter– a regional emergency helicopter transportation service providing rapid transportation for critically ill and injured patients who need immediate specialized care. The LifeFlight satellite base gives the residents of our region immediate access to this life-saving medical transport system.

The hospital's Emergency Department was recently selected as a winner in the 2008 Achievement Awards contest sponsored by the Hospital Association of Pennsylvania.  The department was honored for operational excellence and was one of 16 hospital programs selected from more than 100 entries.  The winning entry, "Patient-focused Changes in Emergency Department Processes Leads to Increased Patient Satisfaction and Growth," described the processes that the Canonsburg General Hospital Emergency Department staff implemented to improve patient flow.
