About the AGH-WPH Medical Education Consortium
The Allegheny General Hospital - Western Pennsylvania Hospital Medical Education Consortium (the Consortium) was established as a distinct administrative unit on July 1, 2009. With the approval of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the Consortium is now the sponsoring institution for GME programs of Allegheny General Hospital, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital and Forbes Regional Hospital.
Allegheny General Hospital (Allegheny General), The Western Pennsylvania Hospital (West Penn) and Forbes Regional Hospital (Forbes) are the primary teaching institutions within the System. Two other non-teaching community hospitals are also part of the Health System – namely, Allegheny Valley Hospital and Canonsburg General Hospital. The Health System is governed by a single Board of Directors who have ultimate responsibility for the quality and accreditation of the GME programs.
The Consortium is led by a Vice President for GME/Designated Institutional Official (DIO), Jack Wilberger, MD, who serves as the Chair of the Consortium’s GME Committee. Dr. Wilberger, as the Vice President/DIO, has the required authority to oversee and administer all graduate medical education programs within the Consortium. He reports directly to the Executive Vice President for Medical Affairs of the Health System, who in turn reports to the Health System’s CEO. As DIO for the Consortium, Dr. Wilberger prepares and submits annual reports and other communications to the medical staff of the three participating teaching hospitals, as well as to the System’s Board of Directors.
The Consortium has an annual operating budget for the DIO, the GMEC and the GME Office and ensures that each Program Director has sufficient financial support and other resources.
