Welcome to our Internal Medicine Residency Program website. I trust that you will find the site to be useful as you begin to acquaint yourself with our program. I would like to provide a quick overview of who we are and where we have been, to familiarize you with our residency program.
Our Internal Medicine Residency Program has been sponsored since July 2010 by the Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) - Western Pennsylvania Hospital (WPH) Medical Education Consortium, a union of The Western Pennsylvania Hospital and Allegheny General Hospital residency programs. Both programs had been in existence for many years prior to the union and were widely recognized for their clinical and academic excellence on both the regional and national levels. Our current residents carry on the proud traditions of our parent programs as they continue to excel in both the clinical and academic arenas. Their success is achieved as they work in an outstanding healthcare system with a national reputation for providing the highest level of sophisticated medical care.
The Department of Medicine contributes significantly to the system’s overall capabilities as it delivers primary and subspecialty care of the highest quality. Department members have distinguished themselves both clinically and academically in care for numerous conditions, including congestive heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, renal disease, liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, hematologic conditions, oncology, endocrinology, infectious diseases and autoimmune disorders. While the system’s clinical capability provides our residents with outstanding patient care opportunities, our experienced clinical faculty, institutional medical school affiliations, and departmental fellowship programs enhance the academic environment of the program.
Formal affiliations with Temple University School of Medicine, Drexel University College of Medicine, and Lake Erie Osteopathic College of Medicine afford our residents constant opportunities to teach and learn from medical students rotating on our hospital floors. On-site fellowship programs in cardiology, pulmonary-critical care medicine, gastroenterology, hematology, oncology, nephrology and infectious diseases further augment the academic atmosphere of the program. The impact of this atmosphere on our residents’ development is evidenced by our outstanding achievements in resident scholarly activity. Over the past several years, our program's residents have presented their work at multiple regional and national meetings, published in multiple peer reviewed journals, and contributed significantly to departmental research activities. Resident research activity is substantially supported by our nationally renowned Allegheny-Singer Research Institute.
Finally, it is important to point out that our residents’ achievements are accomplished in a warm and nurturing atmosphere. On a daily basis we strive to take our commitment to medical education seriously while not taking ourselves too seriously. We value our diversity and we value one another.
Thank you so much for taking a look at our program. We wish you the best of luck as you embark on the process of choosing a medical residency, and we hope that you will stop by to see us during the upcoming interview season.
