Director's Welcome

Mary Lynn Sealey, M.D.Thank you for your interest in the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Allegheny General (AGH) and The Western Pennsylvania (WPH) hospitals.

Our dedicated faculty and staff share a strong commitment to providing residents with exceptional learning opportunities across the spectrum of internal medicine and its subspecialties.

First, a snapshot of our residents' achievements:

  • Last year, numerous residents were involved in research projects and 14 gave presentations at national meetings, including SGIM and ACP.
  • They contributed to articles in numerous peer-reviewed publications such as the Journal of Interventional Cardiology and Infectious Diseases in Clinical Practice.
  • Our graduates were welcomed to fellowships or practice at prestigious hospitals across the nation, including Johns Hopkins University, University of Pennsylvania, Cleveland Clinic, and University of Michigan.

As an introduction to our hospitals:

  • AGH and WPH are members of the region's second largest healthcare system, which serves patients of all ages and socioeconomic levels, from various cultures, and with a wide range of acute and chronic conditions.
  • We have world-class programs in cardiovascular care (including heart transplantation), infectious diseases and biofilms research, renal transplantation, a Ryan White HIV program, the region's first and only ABA/ACS-verified burn program for both adult and pediatric patients, a sports medicine program (official doctors for the Pittsburgh Pirates), a hematological malignancies and FACT-accredited bone marrow transplant program, breast cancer care/NSABP, care for hypothalamic and pituitary disorders, critical care, GI disorders centers (IBD, functional bowel, and pelvic floor disorders), and care for autoimmunity disorders, including a Lupus Center of Excellence.
  • With a Level I Trauma Center at AGH and Level III Neonatal ICU at WPH, our hospitals serve as tertiary/quaternary regional resources for the most complex conditions. In the past year, AGH experienced 29,000 inpatient admissions, 900,000 outpatient visits, and 68,000 emergency room visits.

About our learning environment:

  • Including our programs' 115 residents (with 30 categorical and 10 preliminary PGY 1 positions), the Consortium sponsors 500 residents and fellows. They benefit from the experience and expertise of faculty drawn from the organization's 2,800 medical staff practicing in a wide variety of settings.
  • Our organization's STAR (simulation) Center offers a 'virtual hospital' environment for hands-on learning and skills practice, while our partnership with Temple University School of Medicine and affiliations with Drexel University College of Medicine and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine provide our residents opportunities to serve as educators and role models for the next generation of physicians.
  • Our residents and fellows also benefit from a robust research experience in partnership with our organization's Allegheny-Singer Research Institute, with strong support for submitting articles for publication or presenting at national meetings.

We warmly invite you to visit our program and learn more about what we have to offer you.

Sincerely,
Mary Lynn Sealey, MD
Internal Medicine Residency Program Director
