Life After Residency
When residents graduate from any program they have to make certain life choices. First, they must decide to seek out fellowship training or go into general orthopaedics. From there they must decide on the location of their practice, private or group practice, rural or academic center, research or no. Graduates from the Allegheny General Hospital Residency Program can be successful in any of these career paths.
Nationally 90% of residents go on to fellowship training after completing orthopaedic residency. The graduates at Allegheny are no different. They have secured some of the top fellowship positions throughout the country in a variety of orthopaedic subspecialties. Our alumni have been successful in both academic and private practice positions.
It can easily be said that the telltale sign of the quality of a residency program is not the current residents, but the residents that have already finished. What they do and are capable of is in large part thanks to the training that they received during their residency. One may also speculate that the ultimate decision about pursuing a career in general orthopaedics immediately after residency is based on the comfort level of the resident and the confidence that they can perform cases without supervision. This is something which may only be achieved in the operating suite through repetition and constant supervision over the course of five years.
