Library Resources

Resources available through the Forbes Regional Hospital Health Sciences Library include the following.

 

Databases

 

  • PubMed - Get instant, user-friendly access to the latest information on evaluation, diagnosis, clinical management, prognosis, and prevention.Get instant, user-friendly access to the latest information on evaluation, diagnosis, clinical management, prognosis, and prevention.  PubMed comprises more than 20 million citations for biomedical literature from MEDLINE life science journals, and online books.  Citations may include links to full-text content from PubMed Central and publisher web sites. PubMed Medline is a freely available on the World Wide Web.
     

 

  • EBSCO - EBSCO is a commercial database producer (available on organization-networked computers only) and takes the data from MEDLINE database and puts it with its own search interface.
     

 

  • CINAHL - CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature)  is a database of nursing and allied health literature, similar to MEDLINE for medical literature. CINAHL is a full-text database that contains searchable cited references, legal cases, clinical innovations, critical paths, drug records, research instruments and clinical trials.

 

  • Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (CDSR) - the CDSR contains full-text articles as well as protocols focusing on the effects of health care. The reviews are highly structured and systematic, with evidence included or excluded on the basis of explicit quality criteria, to minimize bias. Data are evidence-based and often combined statistically (with meta-analysis) to increase the power of the findings of numerous studies, each too small to produce reliable results individually.

 

  • OVID - Ovid is an integrated suite of databases and full-text journals which provides access to biomedical information. MEDLINE is the principal database available through this system.  One can search simultaneously across all subscribed online resources using just a single query. It is also possible to stay up-to-date on current and upcoming theories, developments, and techniques with AutoAlerts and RSS feeds.

 


Clinical Resources

 

  • Up-To-Date - Up-To-Date is a comprehensive evidence-based clinical information resource.  It is designed to get physicians the concise, practical answers they need when they need them the most - at the point of care.  Up-To-Date enables physicians to access the most current information within their specialty; recognize the clinical manifestations of a wide variety of disorders and describe current options for diagnosis, management, and therapy, including the efficacy, doses, and interactions of individual drugs; and identify optimal screening and prevention strategies.
     
  • Essential Evidence Plus - Essential Evidence Plus (EEP) offers "just-in-time" evidence-based answers to primary care questions; emphasis is on PDA use.
     
  • MDConsult - MDConsult is a collection of electronic information resources designed to meet the clinical content needs of physicians and other healthcare professionals.  It provides instant, user-friendly access to the latest information on evaluation, diagnosis, clinical management, prognosis, and prevention.  MD Consult integrates a collection of medical reference books, medical journals, MEDLINE, drug information, practice guidelines, educational handouts, and an online continuing medical education center.

 


Electronic Books

 

  • STAT!Ref - A pioneer in software as a service (SaaS), STAT!Ref  includes cross-searchable, full-text, top-tier titles in a breadth of healthcare disciplines from a wide variety of reputable authors, publishers and societies.  It provides access to 18 medical texts covering the areas of pharmacology, dermatology, orthopedics, internal medicine, pediatrics, diagnosis, psychiatry, toxicology, family medicine, geriatrics, intensive care, immunology, emergency medicine, physiology, alternative medicine, surgery, urology, and obstetrics.  It also includes access to PIER: the Physicians' Information and Education Resource.  Use this resource to find authoritative, evidence-based guidance to improve clinical care.
     
  • Harrison's Online - This online resource features the complete contents of Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, 17th Edition.
     
  • MDConsult Books - Researchers can search the content of 40 core medical textbooks simultaneously, retrieving occurrences by title with links to relevant sections.

 


Continuing Education

 

  • Online CME -CMEList.com provides a description of every web site that offers AMA-approved CME online. At this time, over 300 sites are listed. These sites offer over 16,000 separate activities and over 22,000 hours of credit.
     
  • Medscape Nursing CE - Requires registration, but both registration and CE are free.
     
  • ABOG Reading List - The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) is an independent, non-profit organization that certifies obstetricians and gynecologists in the United States.  This Reading List is updated three times a year (January, April, and July).

 


Drug Resources
 

  • Micromedex - Search for summaries and detailed monographs for drugs, toxicological managements, reproductive risks, and acute/emergency care. Find drug interactions, generic names, dosing information.
     
  • PDR Nurses Handbook - 2010 Nurse's Drug Database (log-in required).
