The Cervical Cancer Research Institute of The Western Pennsylvania Hospital

Cervical cancer is a disease that strikes more than 500,000 women worldwide. When detected early, it is a highly treatable form of cancer, yet many women are not diagnosed until it is too late. Although the Pap test has dramatically reduced the incidence of cervical cancer, there is currently no cure or prevention for cervical cancer.

Researchers at The Cervical Cancer Research Institute of The Western Pennsylvania Hospital are conducting laboratory studies and working toward developing vaccines both to treat and prevent cancer of the cervix. A multidisciplinary approach is being utilized to identify the viral antigens that will produce cellular immune responses to cancerous cells in the human body. Clinical trials of a therapeutic cervical cancer vaccine began in the summer of 2000. In addition, the researchers of the Institute have developed a prophylactic vaccine, which they believe will prevent the development of cervical cancer.
