Back to Student Courses

Gateway Medical Society

This nine week course is designed for 6th grade students who are interested in pursuing a career in the allied health field. In this course, students are introduced to various allied health careers through didactic teaching, guest lecturers, and hands-on simulated experiences. In this engaging course, students are active learners, learning about medical careers with their eyes, ears, and hands. The course begins by showing students various pieces of common medical equipment and teaching them about their uses. Students are then introduced to careers by listening to nursing and medical students’ first-hand accounts of what it really means to embark on a journey to achieve a medical career. They also hear first-hand from medical professionals, who are already working in the field, what typical work days involve. Simulated activities are sprinkled throughout the program and highlight the importance of team building and working together effectively as a team. This course provides the future health care leaders of tomorrow with a solid introduction to many health care career choices.
