This five week course is designed for 7th grade students who have satisfactorily completed the 6th grade Gateway Medical Society Allied Health Training Academy. In this course, students refine the skills they learned during the previous year and also learn new skills through didactic teaching, videos, and hands-on simulated experiences. In this engaging course, students are active learners, learning about medical careers with their eyes, ears, and hands. Students learn the skills necessary to attain an American Heart Association Heartsaver completion card and practice many aspects of first aid. This course provides the future health care leaders of tomorrow with a solid introduction to many health care career choices.

Curriculum

• STAR Re-Orientation/Review of the 6th Grade Curriculum
• Communicating in the Health Career Field
• Heartsaver CPR/AED Training
• Basic First Aid
• Introduction to Vital Signs

Learning Objectives

• Explain what knowledge they retained from previous STAR experiences
• Professionally communicate with “patients” in the simulated hospital environment
• Identify people needing CPR
• Perform CPR on adults and children
• Demonstrate basic concepts of first aid
• Demonstrate the ability to assess pulse, respirations and temperature

Expected Outcomes

• Exhibit professional communication skills
• Receive an American Heart Association CPR course completion card
• Provide first aid to people suffering traumatic injuries or medical emergencies

Audience

7th grade students from Pittsburgh Public Schools. Applications are accepted by Mr. Morris Turner, Youth Program Coordinator, Gateway Medical Society.
