Standardized Patient Course

This course is designed for GI fellows to assist them in integrating knowledge and interpersonal skills to meet the identified needs of their patients. This course uses Standardized Patients as a teaching tool to enable fellows to actively practice effective communication skills to assess, diagnose and treat pain, and symptom management. This course focuses on providing holistic care that addresses the physical, psychological, spiritual, and cultural diversity of patients and their families.

Learning Objectives

  1. Demonstrate the ability to integrate knowledge, professionalism, communication and interpersonal skills into a physical assessment.
  2. Utilize effective communication skills to address patient pain, symptom management and establish a patient-centered system of care that assists patients to understand the nature of their illness and make informed decisions about their care.
  3. Demonstrate the ability to provide care that addresses the control of distressing physical, psychological and spiritual symptoms, considering different cultural backgrounds to meet the needs of the patient and family.
  4. Recognize the stress associated with a serious illness and its’ impact on patients and their families.
  5. Identify the need to address and effectively deal with the emotional aspects of a serious illness on the patient and family and offer timely referrals to interdisciplinary team members to meet these identified needs.

Expected Outcomes

At the completion of this course the learner will:

  1. Integrate knowledge, professionalism, and interpersonal skills into physical assessment.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to accurately assess, diagnose, and manage patient care based on their physical assessment findings.
  3. Implement holistic patient family centered care to meet the physical, psychological, spiritual and cultural needs of their patients and families.
