Department of Medicine: Intern Emergency Series

This 10-day course consists of two sessions in which interns in Medicine will practice emergency medical procedures and develop their cognitive skills.

Session #1: Procedures
Interns are instructed in the proper indications, risks, complications, and tactile performance of several common emergency procedures, including:

  • Arthrocentesis
  • Central Venous Catheterization
  • Lumbar Puncture
  • Nasogastric Intubation
  • Peripheral Venous Blood Draws
  • Peripheral Venous Lines

Session #2: Cognitive Skills Development
Interns, working as a group, are confronted with common floor medical emergencies, including:

  • Change in mental status
  • Pulmonary edema
  • Status asthmaticus
  • Transfusion reaction

Working together as a team, they must gather data and appropriately respond to patients' critical illnesses. The response may include provision of mechanical ventilation, if adequately trained personnel are available, to provide advanced airway management. The response will then include the proper utilization of appropriate medications.
