Education

Clinical Skills Competency

Back to Multidiscipline Courses

This one-day training, designed for newly hired medical assistants, teaches participants how to accurately assess patients, use basic medical equipment, and perform standard office procedures. Participants will learn how to accurately obtain and record vital signs, such as temperature, pulse, respiration and blood pressure. In this training, participants will also learn about various pieces of medical equipment such as metered dose inhalers (MDIs), sphygmomanometers, Holter monitors, and the Snellen eye chart. The new employees will have the opportunity to practice using these instruments in a simulated environment where they will also perfect common medical techniques, such as determining injection sites and delivery methods, changing dressings, removing sutures, and in-house testing for urinalysis, PPD, planting and blood sugar.

Other basic medical information will be reviewed such as common respiratory infections, the sterile technique, medications and their side effects. This training, which is part of new hires’ orientation, will prepare them for their roles in provider visit preparation, patient monitoring, and patient assessment in response to various therapies.
