Palliative Care

This is a two hour course designed for internal medicine residents. Residents will participate in simulated activities with a standardized patient, gaining experience discussing end-of-life plans. They will be required to assess and manage symptoms in a medically complex, frail patient. Residents are expected to utilize effective communication skills, both verbally and nonverbally throughout the simulations.

Learning Objectives

  • Gain trust of a new patient using verbal and nonverbal techniques
  • Assess and manage multiple symptoms in a medically complex, frail patient
  • Discuss end-of-life planning

Expected Outcomes

  • Develop a trusting relationship with their patient through the use of effective verbal and nonverbal communication techniques
  • Accurately assess and manage a frail elderly patient with medically complex conditions
  • Demonstrate the ability to discuss end-of-life issues with an increased comfort level
