The City of Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, home to The Western Pennsylvania Hospital, is one of America's premier centers of medical science and research. The University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, museums, and some of the city's best cultural attractions, restaurants, and night life are all located within the neighborhoods immediately surrounding The Western Pennsylvania Hospital.

Known as one of the nation's most livable cities and a home to great major league sports teams, today's Pittsburgh has evolved into a major center for health care, industrial research and development, education, transportation, manufacturing, retailing, finance, culture, and high technology. A viable national economic force, Pittsburgh is in the top five among cities for corporate headquarters.

Pittsburgh cultural highlights include the world-renowned Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, and the Pittsburgh Opera Company, all of which perform in two beautiful theatrical houses downtown - the Heinz Hall for the Performing Arts and the Benedum Center.

Outside the city, there is easy access to golf courses, ski slopes, and lodges, hiking trails, and whitewater rafting. The mountains of western Pennsylvania offer hunting and fishing, magnificent views, a rich canopy of green in the summer, and a glorious display of color in the fall.

Unlike other U.S. cities its size, Pittsburgh remains low in crime and is a relatively inexpensive city, particularly with respect to housing. For the young house officer deciding on the best location for residency training, Pittsburgh offers the advantages of other big cities without many of the problems.
