Summer Camp for Burned Children

June 2012

West Penn Hospital’s Summer Camp for Burned Children celebrated its 26th year of helping children with burn injuries move forward in the healing process through camaraderie and fun. The annual event took place June 9-13 in Pittsburgh and Camp Kon-O-Kwee near Zelienople, Pa.

Campers spent their first day at the Pittsburgh Zoo and attending a Pittsburgh Pirates game before leaving for Camp Kon-O-Kwee. Camp activities included a car show, swimming, fishing, crafts, canoeing, hiking, bowling and a climbing wall and campfire, as well as peer group meetings that gave campers time to talk to one another about their experiences.

Tuesday night featured the big Sock Hop, hot rod rides and a drive-in movie. The campers enjoyed a trip to Kennywood Park before returning home.

Donations from firefighting groups, businesses, organizations and individuals help make Camp free to any child who has been treated at West Penn Burn Center. There were 30 youngsters at camp this year.
