Opportunities

People volunteer for a variety of reasons. Students are looking for valuable career and work experience and use volunteering as a way to explore the healthcare field, gain job references, and fulfill school community service. Adults, on the other hand, volunteer to share their skills and talents, to lend a helping hand, and for socialization and interaction with others. Whether you have a little time or a lot, all volunteers make important contributions. It's also a great way to give something back to your community.

Many volunteers choose to volunteer directly with patients, their families and hospital visitors in the following areas:

Greeters and Guiders

Volunteer Greeters and Guiders assist patients and visitors to the hospital by providing directions, information, and on occasion escort patients to their destination. Great way to meet new people!

Intensive Care Waiting Room Liaison

Volunteers provide refreshments and emotional support to families and visitors while in the Intensive Care Unit waiting areas. Three ICU's are covered by volunteers including trauma, surgical/neurology, medical/coronary care.

Nursing Units

Junior Volunteers have the opportunity to assist staff and patients on the nursing unit. Duties include : filling and distributing water pitchers, bed making, transporting specimens, escorting patients, and helping with meal trays in addition to visiting with patients. Great opportunity for the student who is considering a career in nursing or medicine.

Occupational Therapy

Students who are studying the field of Occupational Therapy benefit greatly from the volunteer experience in the OT department. Duties include: Stocking OT supplies, some clerical work, patient transportation and errands.

Operating Rooms

Both high school and college students who are at least 16 years of age have the opportunity to volunteer in the ORs. The volunteer's main duty is to transport patients to and from the OR. Other duties include: stocking of supplies, errands within the OR and to various other areas of the hospital. This is a great opportunity for the pre-med or nursing student.

Pastoral Care

Eucharistic Minister volunteers distribute holy communion and spend time in prayer with Catholic patients.

Patient Representatives

Volunteers add to the patient's positive hospital experience by becoming a member of the Patient Representative group. As part of our on-going Service Excellence mission, patient representative volunteers visit with in-patients to inquire about their hospital experience and relay any feedback or suggestions for improvement to the appropriate staff for follow-up.

Patient Mail Delivery

Volunteers brighten the day of our patients by visiting with them and delivering their cards and letters. Some may even ask you to read their mail to them or write a letter for them. This opportunity provides great exercise and a way to meet many new and interesting people.

Patient Escort

Volunteers transport patients via wheelchair or stretcher to various areas of the hospital. This opportunity provides great exercise and lots of interaction with patients!

Physical Therapy

Both students and adults enjoy this volunteer opportunity where they transport patients back to their rooms after therapy, stock supplies and assist with patient ambulation. This opportunity provides great exercise and interaction with patients.

Pet TherapyPet Therapy

TDI (Therapy Dogs International) certified dogs and their handlers provide comfort, companionship and safe therapeutic recreation for patients and staff throughout the hospital.

Reiki TherapyReiki Therapy

Trained and certified Reiki practitioners (minimum Level II or Master) volunteer their services providing Reiki sessions for patients, visitors and staff. Reiki volunteers are invaluable to the patient experience by providing stress reduction and relaxation.

Others who prefer to contribute in non-patient areas may choose from:

Clerical and Computer Projects

Many clerical opportunities are available throughout the hospital. Duties include: answering the phone, filing, bulk mailings, errands and various data entry and computer projects. Great opportunity for the person who either has clerical or computer skills and wants to put them to good use or for the person who would like to learn and expand their skills.

Fund Raising

Volunteers who enjoy fundraising and special events will want to be a part of the AGH Auxiliary. Many events are planned throughout the year which benefit the hospital including: book fairs, jewelry sales, annual golf outing, bake sales and visit with Santa for the children to name just a few.

Mailroom

Volunteers assist the staff in mail sorting and delivery to various units and departments of the hospital. Great opportunity for lots of exercise.

Special Projects

Volunteers assist with a multitude of special projects ranging from labeling and stuffing large bulk mailings to chart preparation. Volunteers can choose to work weekly or on an as needed basis for large group projects. Volunteers have a great time socializing while working on projects together.

 . . . and many, many more!
