West Penn Hospital

Environment of Support for Nursing

West Penn Hospital supports excellence in nursing in a multitude of ways, starting with our Professional Practice Model  and Care Delivery System.  West Penn staff nurses are supported by advance practice nurses such as education and development specialists and all levels of nursing management to provide the highest quality of care and service and to develop professionally.

West Penn Hospital encourages and promotes professional autonomy, career development, and continuing education for nurses and all employees.  The Hospital boasts many advance practice nurses, including certified registered nurse practitioners (CRNPs), certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) and master's- or doctorate-prepared nurses practicing in numerous roles.  The hospital and health system support employees' professional advancement through staff education courses and tuition reimbursement for approved formal education programs.

The Hospital sponsors its own diploma School of Nursing (founded in 1892, accredited by the NLNAC) and offers on-site continuation for the BSN degree from Clarion University of Pa. and online MSN programs.  West Penn nurses may ahold faculty appointments in the School and numerous West Penn nurses serve as preceptors for new orientees, for students in West Penn's or another professional school of nursing, or as mentors for nurses advancing their careers through West Penn's nursing clinical ladder.

Additional healthcare professional educational programs at West Penn include the Temple University School of Medicine clinical campus at WPAHS, graduate medical education programs sponsored by the Allegheny General Hospital - West Penn Hospital Medical Education Consortium,  the West Penn Hospital / Indiana University of Pa. School of Respiratory Care (the state's first and nation's fifth cooperative BS in Respiratory Care program), and affiliations with regional schools for Radiologic Technology education.

The Richard M. Johnston Health Sciences Library at West Penn provides inhouse and online materials for nursing research and the assistance of trained medical librarians.

"West Penn Hospital has an excellent reputation for patient care
and I see this among my co-workers every day."

The Education and Development Department, directed and staffed by master's-prepared nurses, provides mentoring for new employees, mandatory education, department-specific education and annually offers a variety of classes for those interested in expanding their practice capabilities.

"I appreciate the advanced technology at West Penn and working with knowledgeable colleagues."
