Nursing Research

Nursing research is a vital component of excellence in evidence-based nursing practice at West Penn Hospital. The Nursing Education, Research and Evidence-Based Practice Council offers the following programs to promote research planning and implementation, and the dissemination and use of the results:

All staff are invited to membership on the West Penn Hospital Nursing Division's Nursing Education, Research, and Evidence-Based Practice Council and to participate in educational activities such as Journal Club.

Nursing Research Day

Each June, The Western Pennsylvania Hospital Nursing Division holds its annual Nursing Research Day in the Wintergarden, hosted by the Nursing Education, Research and Evidence-Based Practice Council.

Each event is attended by hundreds of nurses, student nurses, and other members of the healthcare team, who review posters describing RN-led research, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement projects completed by or occurring throughout the hospital.

Staff are available as well to discuss with colleagues their projects to improve patient outcomes.

Lois W. Hann Fund for Nursing Research

The Lois W. Hann Fund for Nursing Research at West Penn Hospital is an endowment fund that encourages and supports nursing research at the clinical level.

Lois Weigand Hann, a 1948 graduate of The Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing, gave the endowment to The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in 1983.

  • On an ongoing basis, the Fund is available to cover expenses incurred by nurses conducting nursing research.
  • On an annual basis, the Fund is available to provide a monetary award and plaque to acknowledge a nurse for outstanding performance in nursing research.

Nurses at West Penn Hospital can apply for Hann Fund monies to conduct nursing research by submitting a request form to the chairperson of the West Penn Hospital Nursing Research Committee.

Nurse Research Internship Program

Research-based clinical practice is an ongoing challenge. One way in which The Western Pennsylvania Hospital Nursing Division is conquering this challenge is the establishment of the Nursing Research Internship Program (NRIP).

The NRIP is financially supported by the Lois W. Hann Fund for Nursing Research.
West Penn Hospital staff nurse applicants (two every 6 months) are selected based upon the relevance of their research question.

The NRIP interns receive:

  • 144 hours of paid time over 12 months to actively work on their research project and the guidance of an education and development specialist whose focus is to mentor nurses through the research process

The internship program begins with attendance at the Nursing Research Course.
This 4-hour course is open to all West Penn Hospital staff nurses and addresses basic research concepts:

  • evidence-based practice
  • how to write a problem statement
  • how to conduct a computerized literature review
  • how to critique and weigh the significance of nursing literature

Interest in nursing research is growing throughout West Penn Hospital, and clinical staff nurses are conducting a variety of relevant nursing research projects that will have an impact on the quality of nursing care. Outcomes of our efforts will be evaluated to assist with the ongoing challenge of mentoring nurses to conduct research at the clinical bedside.
