West Penn Hospital

Professional Nursing Practice Opportunities

"The flexibility with scheduling at West Penn is great!"

Nurses at West Penn Hospital have attractive options for scheduling their work time. They also have numerous opportunities to advance their careers and contribute to the profession.

Scheduling Options

West Penn Hospital offers professional nurses two attractive scheduling options, the Lifestyle Choices program and the Registry.

Lifestyle Choices Program
Professional nurses hired to inpatient care units or West Penn's Home Health Agency may participate in the Lifestyle Choices Program, which offers a choice of either weekday or weekend scheduling.

Weekday nurses work primarily from 7 a.m. Monday to 7 p.m. Friday (rotating shifts), and if they would have to pick up a weekend shift due to staffing needs, there is a per-hour weekend differential.

Weekend nurses work two 12-hour shifts between Friday 7 p.m. and Monday 7 a.m. and are paid a premium hourly rate.

For more information about West Penn Hospital's Lifestyle Choices Program, contact West Penn Allegheny Health System Nurse Recruiter Donna Murray, BSN, RN (412.330.2621).

West Penn Hospital's Registry (supplemental staffing department) offers registered nurses casual, part-time and full-time positions with a variety of scheduling options.

Nurses in the Registry are assigned to patient care units based on clinical experience and needs of the unit.

Premium rates are offered based on areas of competency.

For more information about West Penn Hospital's Lifestyle Choices Program, contact West Penn Allegheny Health System Nurse Recruiter Donna Murray, BSN, RN (412.330.2621).

Unit-based casual positions are available for registered nurses at West Penn Hospital based on the nurse's experience.

Scheduling options include self-scheduling and participative scheduling.

"I have been a weekend nurse in West Penn's Lifestyle Choices Program, and I am very happy with my decision. I am able to be at home with my children during the week when they need me most."

Professional Advancement Opportunities

Professional advancement opportunities at West Penn Hospital include the following:

Professional Development Program - Clinical Nurse III - The Professional Recognition Program at West Penn Hospital provides an opportunity for nurses who demonstrate superior knowledge and clinical nursing skills to advance to positions that capitalize on their expertise in delivering direct patient care. Nurses in the position of Clinical Nurse II who have achieved goals in a variety of areas of patient care and education, contributed to their units, the hospital, and their communities, and completed challenging self-examination tasks are eligible to apply for advancement to Clinical Nurse III.

Professional Recognition Program - Academy of Excellence - The Nursing Division of West Penn Hospital acknowledges registered nurses who exhibit excellence in both clinical and professional practice. Academy of Excellence appointees are awarded and recognized for their commitment to the profession of nursing. Those in the Academy consistently demonstrate excellence in leadership, communication and clinical performance.

Certification in a Nursing Specialty - The value of certification in a nursing specialty in influencing the delivery of safe and effective care is undeniable. While licensure measures entry-level competence of a new nurse, certification validates a nurse's specialty knowledge, experience, clinical judgment and critical thinking.

West Penn Hospital supports and encourages RNs in the demonstration of specialized knowledge and skills by reimbursing nurses for the cost of the examination fee to obtain certification or recertification in their nursing specialty.

Nursing Research Internship Program - West Penn Hospital offers a Nursing Research Internship to assist West Penn nurses in conducting research. Nurses may request more information from the chairperson of the West Penn Hospital Nursing Research Committee.
