Medical students planning to study at West Penn Allegheny Health System often ask about housing options in the area. There are a number of areas that offer a unique atmosphere and numerous apartments for rent, as well as condominiums and houses for sale.

Allegheny General Hospital and the main campus are located across the Allegheny River from downtown Pittsburgh on what is referred to as Pittsburgh's North Side; Forbes Regional Hospital is located in Monroeville (a suburb of Pittsburgh) and The Western Pennsylvania Hospital is located in the Bloomfield neighborhood of Pittsburgh's East End.

North Side is a section of Pittsburgh located just across the Allegheny and Ohio rivers from downtown Pittsburgh. The first World Series was played here, at Exposition Park, and the North Side was home to famous composer Stephen Foster. The North Side has a large array of attractions, recreation, restaurants and housing.

There are a number of apartments and other housing options on the North Side. In addition, there is housing in downtown Pittsburgh, which is approximately 15 minutes from the North Side and Allegheny General Hospital.

Pittsburgh's East End neighborhoods include Bloomfield, Highland Park, Shadyside, and Squirrel Hill.

Bloomfield, where The Western Pennsylvania Hospital is located, celebrates its Italian heritage.   Bloomfield and the adjacent Friendship area have many older homes with apartments that feature high ceilings and original woodwork. This largely residential area is an attractive option for those seeking modest and comfortable living quarters.

Highland Park is a largely residential area that offers apartments in large homes, many featuring Victorian-style architecture.

Shadyside offers upscale shopping and entertainment that draw visitors from outside of the city as well as surrounding neighborhoods. The homes in this area are popular choices for young professionals. There are also numerous apartment buildings in this mostly residential area within about a mile of West Penn Hospital.

Squirrel Hill has a very active business and shopping hub and is within two miles of several Pittsburgh universities, attracting many university students, faculty and other professionals, and less than three miles from West Penn Hospital.

Short-Term Housing

Medical students completing rotations at West Penn Allegheny Health System hospitals are offered housing free of charge in The Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing, based on availability. The School of Nursing building, which houses the School's classrooms and offices as well as dormitary facilities, is located at 4900 Friendship Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15224.

Housing amenities in The Western Pennsylvania Hospital School of Nursing include the following:

• Full cooking facility located on 1st floor of the building

Parking is provided for medical students free of charge at all West Penn Allegheny Health System hospitals. Students requiring parking must provide the following vehicle information to the Student Affairs Office:
