Allegheny General Hospital

Allegheny General Hospital (AGH) is host to an extensive array of research initiatives geared to converting theory to clinical success.

Allegheny-Singer Research Institute

(ASRI) is a non-profit, independent research institute and a member of the West Penn Allegheny Health System (WPAHS). Located at AGH, ASRI is responsible for managing and conducting clinical and translational research and research awards.

Interdisciplinary research centers at ASRI include Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Disease Research, the Center for Neurosciences Research, the Center for Genomic Sciences, and Allegheny Cancer Center; ongoing research is also conducted in the departments of Anesthesiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Emergency Medicine, Infectious Disease, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Orthopaedic Surgery and Psychiatry.

ASRI also holds site agreements with several federally funded cooperative groups, including ACOSOG, ACRIN, NCCTG, RTOG, and SWOG.

National funding sources for research at ASRI include the American Cancer Society; the Department of Education; the National Cancer Institute; the National Institutes of Health; the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute; the American Heart Association; the National Institute of Diabetes, Digestive and Kidney Diseases; the National Institute of Mental Health; the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease; the National Eye Institute; the National Institute of Justice; the National Science Foundation; the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the National Library of Medicine.  ASRI is also home to the international headquarters of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), sponsor of the largest breast cancer research study in the United States. 

West Penn Hospital

Founded in 1848 as the first chartered public hospital west of the Allegheny Mountains, West Penn Hospital is a 251-licensed bed academic medical center that has been regionally and nationally recognized for excellence in nursing, bone marrow/cell transplantation, burn care, reproductive medicine and women's and infants' services.

West Penn Hospital is the first hospital in Pittsburgh and western Pennsylvania to be awarded Magnet Recognition status by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. This prestigious designation is an international recognition of excellence in nursing services that has been achieved by only about 6 percent of the nation's healthcare facilities.

West Penn's Burn Center was the first and is the only burn program in the region to receive verification honors five times by the Committee on Trauma of the American College of Surgeons and the American Burn Association.

West Penn Hospital's obstetrics program is one of the busiest in the region and its Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is one of the region's largest referral resources for sick newborns. West Penn Hospital also is home to the patient offices for the Jones Institute at West Penn Allegheny Health System, an affiliate of the renowned Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine of the Eastern Virginia Medical School.

West Penn's Rehabilitation Units help hundreds of patients achieve optimal levels of function after strokes, burns, neurological or orthopedic injuries, multiple trauma, or left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation.

The Western Pennsylvania Cancer Institute provides the most advanced diagnostic and treatment services for all types of cancer, including breast, gynecologic, prostate, colorectal and hematologic (blood) cancers. The Cancer Institute has earned national recognition for its bone marrow/ cell transplantation program, one of the largest in Pennsylvania. The Institute also boasts leading-edge radiation oncology services and was the second cancer center in the world to offer intensity-modulated radiation therapy. Patients have access to the latest treatment protocols through the Cancer Institute's participation in national research groups such as the Cancer and Leukemia Group B (CALGB), American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG), and Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG).

Specialized outpatient centers at West Penn Hospital include Ambulatory Surgery Center, Foot and Ankle Institute, Gastroenterology Lab, Joslin Diabetes Center, Institute for Pain Medicine, Lupus Center of Excellence,  Pelvic Floor Center, Radiation Oncology and Sleep Center.

West Penn Hospital is a leader in the education of healthcare professionals, providing training to medical students and graduate medical education and continuing education to physicians. West Penn also provides education programs for nurses and other members of the healthcare team, including a School of Nursing (affiliated with Clarion University of Pennsylvania); a School of Respiratory Care (affiliated with Indiana University of Pennsylvania); and affiliations with Pennsylvania State University and other programs of Radiologic Technology

Forbes Hospital

Forbes Hospital is a 318-bed hospital in Monroeville, Pa., that provides high-quality health care to residents of eastern Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. Forbes offers a complete array of advanced inpatient and outpatient surgical, medical, obstetrical and rehabilitative services.

Specialized services at Forbes include heart and vascular care, Joslin Diabetes Center, obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics, and the Gerald McGinnis Emergency Department, one of the busiest in the region. Forbes is a certified Stroke Center, providing rapid, advanced assessment and treatment for this life-threatening condition.

Forbes offers advanced diagnostic imaging, oncology care, orthopaedics, outpatient surgery, and psychiatric care. The Forbes Lifestyle Center is dedicated to providing unique opportunities to help patients improve their health with personalized diet and fitness programs.

Forbes Hospice, located on the eighth floor of the Tower at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, is the region's oldest and most respected end-of-life and palliative care program, providing care for families from Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Washington and Westmoreland counties. Forbes Hospice has helped thousands of terminally ill people to live each day to the fullest, surrounded by the comfort of family and friends.

Forbes' Women's and Infants' Care Center offers families quality, comprehensive care in a homelike setting. Eleven beautiful, spacious suites are designed so that babies, mothers and husbands or partners can remain together in the same room throughout the stay.

The Ed Dardanell Heart & Vascular Center offers the latest technologies and critical services needed for life-saving heart and vascular care. The center's physicians perform open-heart surgery and other advanced procedures, catheterizations, angioplasties and stent procedures. Doctors also use state-of-the-art technology to enable endovascular grafting and other specialized vascular procedures. The Center houses a dedicated Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit.
