Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. WTAE-TV: Cold temperatures pose dangers for local sled riders

Tuesday, January 12th, 2010

A 10-year-old boy was rushed to Children’s Hospital after a sled riding accident in Squirrel Hill on Sunday.

The boy was listed in fair condition after slamming into a tree at a popular sled riding destination on Sunday.

Parents told Channel 4 Action News that this was the third sled riding accident in that area in the past three days.

The Children’s Hospital said they have seen 15 to 20 accidents involving sled riding on Sunday alone.

Doctors at Allegheny General Hospital told Channel 4 Action News’ Tara Edwards, that icy slopes isn't the only factor to be worried about, but also when temperatures drop into the teens, the cold weather can be equally as dangerous.

"This year it’s been more the case because it’s been colder, so you have the cold related injuries as well -- skin injuries, frostbite, things like that," said Dr. Mara Aloi.
