Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

KDKA-TV: Haitian hospital with local ties helps victims

Friday, January 15th, 2010

A hospital where the wounded are being treated in Haiti has a connection to the Pittsburgh area.

The Albert Schweitzer Hospital was founded by an heir to the Mellon family.

Lucy Rawson's husband is running that hospital, located 90 miles from Port-au-Prince.

"Now, in early afternoon, a crowd of over 200 people are outside the hospital - friends or neighbors of injured patients," she read from an email she received from her husband.

Ian Rawson was driving when the earthquake hit.

"And he thought something was wrong with the car because it was going all over the road and he ended up in the ditch," she said.

The 120-bed hospital, started by Ian's parents in 1954, specializes in trauma and surgery. Post-quake, it has become the closest hospital still standing.

"A lot of traumatic injuries - people who have had buildings fall on them," describes Rawson.

The hospital staff is working around the clock as they worry about their own families.

"Just about everyone there has relatives in Port-au-Prince, in the capital city, and so while they're working they're terribly concerned about their families," Rawson said.

Dr. Steven Williams worked at the Schweitzer Hospital for three years and now spends a month there annually helping the Haitians.

He believes the casualties will be enormous and the public health aftermath a nightmare.
