Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

Pittsburgh Tribune Review: Monroeville man with big heart becomes Forbes Regional milestone patient

Wednesday, January 19th, 2011

Ricky Mauk's heart literally beat out of his chest.

Mauk had his first heart surgery 15 years ago, a procedure that required doctors to remove a rib. After that, his heart began pushing through the opening in his ribcage.

"When I touched my chest, it would nauseate me," he said.

Mauk, 55, of New Florence in Westmoreland County, on Dec. 16, became the 500th patient to undergo open-heart surgery at Forbes Hospital in Monroeville.

Read about it in the Pittsburgh Tribune Review.
