Pledge the Gift of Life

Each year, the lives of thousands of people across the country are saved because someone made the choice to become an organ donor. In April, Allegheny Health Network is honored to celebrate National Donate Life Month and pay tribute to all of those who have bestowed the precious gift of life to another through organ donation. Visit AHNdonate.org to learn more and register to be an organ donor.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: AGH doctor remains in Haiti to assist school

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Chip Lambert, a physician with Allegheny General Hospital and the medical director for the Pittsburgh-based Brother's Brother Foundation, is sitting on the tarmac at the airport in Port-au-Prince tonight, guarding two tons worth of medical supplies.

He arrived in Haiti by plane shortly after 6 p.m. yesterday and unloaded the supplies from the Brother's Brother Foundation. Dr. Lambert, of Sewickley, hopes to get to Leogane School of Nursing today. Dr. Lambert works for the Houston-based Medical Benevolence Foundation, which built the school through shared funding with a USAID grant.

Leogane is about 20 miles west of Port-au-Prince and was above the epicenter of last Tuesday's earthquake.

Dr. Lambert spoke briefly with the Post-Gazette using his BlackBerry, but the connection was weak and communication was difficult.

He was able to respond to an e-mail late tonight. Sleep was impossible, he said, as cargo planes roared overhead.

At the airport, "hoards of people" are preparing to board cargo planes to the United States. Armed military personnel are everywhere, he said, and USAID members appear to be handling logistics.
