AVH's Destination Wellness Offers February Classes

Highmark® Personal Nutrition Coaching
This program empowers the individual to sustain healthy lifestyle changes by assisting with setting goals, better food selection and meal planning.  This one-on-one counseling session is facilitated by a registered dietitian and is designed to address the nutritional changes needed to manage heart disease, diabetes, weight management and other health related issues.  Sessions are by appointment only.  There is no fee for Highmark members to participate in this program; a nominal fee for non-Highmark members.  Call 724.274.5202 today for appointment/details.  
 
Friday, February 1
Kidney Smart SM
2 – 4 p.m.
Participants, in various stages of chronic kidney disease, will learn from expert educators about how the kidneys function and ways to manage diet and health in this community-based educational program.  This program will be held on the second Tuesday of each month.  There is no fee to participate.  Sign up today at KidneySmart.org/Class or call 412.770.7210.  Maximum: 30 attendees.

BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR RENEWAL
8 a.m. - 12 p.m.
If you have a current course completion card for a healthcare provider CPR class taken in the last two years, you can attend this renewal course.  You must present your current card the day of class. This class covers an abbreviated format of the BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR class.  Participants receive a certification card valid for two years after completion of skills and written testing.  Fee:  $30/student (includes required student workbook).  Call to register at 724.274.5202. *Online registrations cannot be accepted if less than 48 hours prior to class.  Maximum: 8 attendees.

BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR
1 – 6 p.m.
If you are a healthcare provider, this class is for you!  It includes adult, child and infant CPR, two-rescuer scenarios with a bag valve mask, foreign body airway obstruction and automated external defibrillation (AED).  Certification card, valid for two years, will be provided after completion of skills and written testing.  Fee: $50 (required student workbook included).  Call to register at 724.274.5202.  *Online registrations cannot be accepted if less than 48 hours prior to class.  Maximum: 8 attendees.

Highmark® Drop 10 in 10® series begins
6 – 7 p.m.
This ten-week Wellness Where You Live Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield lifestyle improvement weight management program is designed to help participants lose 10 pounds       (or 10 percent) of their body weight through optimal nutrition, regular exercise and behavior change.  For Highmark members, there is a $20 toolkit fee; a nominal fee for non-members. The ABC’s of Statins:  About, Benefits, Concerns

Cholesterol lowering drugs, known as “Statins”, have surpassed all other classes of medicines in reducing the incidence of death, heart attack and stroke.  Learn more by joining pharmacist, Jane Holmes, Pharm D from Allegheny Valley Hospital as she presents The ABC’s of Statins.  She will cover topics about how they work and the differences between the various forms, the benefits of using them to prevent heart attack or stroke, and common concerns people have.  Following the presentation, register for a one-on-one personal review of your medications with a pharmacist and bring them with you to meet Jane.  There is no fee to attend this program.  Call to register at 724.274.5202.  Maximum: 30 attendees.

Cardiovascular Disease…Proceed At Your Own Risk!

Birth Basics

This 2 ½-hour session provides women and their partners with updated, accurate information about what to expect when an epidural is given.  Attendees will learn what to expect during the labor and birth process and discover answers for many important questions, including how to tell true from false labor, when to come to the hospital, what an epidural is and what happens if it does not work.  Class fee is $30/couple.  Call to register at 412.578.7271.  Maximum: 20 attendees.

Heartsaver® First Aid CPR AED
